Power BI October 2026: what changed and what it means for new analysts
Microsoft's October 2026 Power BI update adds several features that matter for people learning data analytics.
Copilot and AI. Copilot can now help build Power BI reports with custom visuals. Beginners should use it to draft a page, then check every chart against the data, because an AI-suggested visual is only as good as the fields it uses.
Reporting features now generally available:
Chart plot area background colour, for clearer charts
Auto-expanding hierarchy axis with field parameters, for drill-down reports
Personal bookmarks that keep column widths, so saved views look the same
Features in preview: a Gantt chart for project timelines, and a list slicer with a dropdown. Preview features can change before release, so check their status before using them in client work.
Semantic models also gained more accurate surge protection.
If you are learning Power BI, practise these features on a sample dataset first, and always check the numbers before you share a report.
